From stone to soil

Soil is the growth base for most plants. However, without organic matter soil is just regolith (grind down stone), as this is the case on the moon and mars. So how can we make soil from regolith? While we know that lichen and moss are involved in this process, the mechanism is not well understood. Furthermore, lichen grow far to slow for most research approaches.

Current projects related to soil from stone are:

1. Growth tests on regolith

2. Identify suitable approaches to measure the transformation from regolith to soil

3. Make moss strains that are superior in soil formation (gene editing etc.)
